Bronwen Zande was generous enough with her time to speak to the Montreal Girl Geek Dinner group earlier this month. Visiting us all the way from Brisbane, Australia (OK, well she was here for the "Museums and the Web" conference and not just for the dinner!) Bronwen spoke about how to set up and maintain a virtual work environment and shared her experiences with the tools and techniques her company uses for collaborating and communicating.
Bronwen spoke of the both the pros (you do what you love, choose your projects, cost savings) and cons of virtual work environments (clients can think you are always 'on', timing issues in dealing with multiple time zones) and mentioned her use of skype, messenger, bug tracking tools, a corporate blog, Google docs and Office Live workspace amongst others.
I personally found the talk essential as I'm a project manager who is meeting more and more freelancers in my field and am seeing more and more people switching to 'going solo' as opposed to working for the traditional 'corporate environment'.
