One Issue, Thousands of VoicesBlog Action Day, in its second year now; is an annual nonprofit online event that aims to unite the world’s bloggers, podcasters and videocasters, to post about the same issue, and this is the interesting part; on the same day. Their aim is to raise awareness and trigger a global discussion.
In 2007, the theme was the Environment and by their accounts, it surpassed all expectations.
- 20,603 Blog Participated
- 23,327 Blog Posts
- 14,631,038 RSS Readers
A few blogs who participated in 2007:
Boing Boing, LifeHacker, Mashable, Treehugger, Official Google Blog, Read/Write/Web, GigaOm, DoshDosh, CopyBlogger, The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) and Valleywag.
This year, on October 15, 2008, the theme is Poverty and as Montreal Girl Geeks we have a tremendous opportunity to examine poverty from our own perspectives in our own city. What can you contribute? Blog about it or post a video on your site or use your favorite video conversation site. If you don’t have a blog or you are camera shy, why not donate some time or some money to SunYouth. Even better - Go have supper or even volunteer at Robin Des Bois. Get creative!
Here are some ideas from the Blog Action Day site:
- A Design Blog might analyze a set of charity posters and how they convey their message
- A Tech Blog might look at pro-poor technologies and projects like 1 Laptop Per Child
- A Political Blog might examine the relevant agendas of leading candidates
- A Sports Blog might look at recent charity activities of a major sports franchise
- A Business Blog might discuss how businesses can utilize ethical practices to boost their bottom line
- A Celebrity Blog might write up a who’s who of celebrity causes and how their participation impacts those causes
- A Movie Blog might create a list of the best documentaries relating to issues on poverty
- A Personal Blog might document a personal activity of the blogger that is helping the disadvantaged
Some statistics (as of September 27 @ 11 am):
4,698 have registered and committed their blogs
